What Is an AR Menu?

An AR (augmented reality) menu turns your dishes into 3D models that guests can view life-size on their own table, straight from a QR code — with no app to download.

The short version

An AR menu is a digital menu where each dish is a 3D model instead of a flat photo. A guest points their phone at the QR code on the table, the menu opens in the browser, and they can rotate any dish 360°, zoom in, and place it life-size on the table in front of them using augmented reality.

The key word is "life-size". A photo shows you what a dish looks like; an AR menu shows you how big it actually is and how it will look on your table before you order. That single difference is what removes the "this isn’t what I expected" moment.

How is it different from a normal QR menu?

A normal QR menu is a PDF or a web page with text and photos. It solved one problem — no more printing — but the experience is the same as paper.

An AR menu adds a dimension. Guests don’t just read the menu; they see the food. On iPhone this uses Apple’s Quick Look, and on Android it uses Google’s Scene Viewer — both built into the phone, so nothing needs to be installed. This is often called WebAR: augmented reality that runs directly in the web browser.

Why restaurants use AR menus

Guests order with more confidence when they can see portion size and presentation. That tends to lift orders of higher-margin and signature dishes, because those are the ones that look most impressive in 3D.

There are practical wins too: a multilingual menu means international guests browse in their own language; instant updates mean a price change reaches every table in seconds with no reprinting; and a memorable, shareable experience earns organic social posts when guests film the 3D dish on their table.

How a dish becomes a 3D model

With YZS, you don’t need a 3D scanner or a studio. You upload a photo of the dish to the dashboard and AI generates a true-to-size 3D model in a couple of minutes. You then arrange your categories, prices and languages, and publish — the QR code is generated automatically.

That is the difference between a self-serve platform and a done-for-you service: you stay in control, add or edit items whenever you like, and you are not waiting days for a third party to model each dish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do guests need to download an app to use an AR menu?

No. Guests scan the QR code with their phone camera and the 3D and AR experience opens in the browser. It uses Quick Look on iPhone and Scene Viewer on Android — both built into the phone — so there is nothing to install.

Does an AR menu work on both iPhone and Android?

Yes. Modern iPhones and Android phones both support the built-in AR viewers required, which means the vast majority of your guests can use it with no setup.

Is an AR menu hard to set up?

No. You upload a photo of each dish, AI builds the 3D model, and you publish. Most venues have a working menu the same day, without any technical skills.
